KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) — A Park Hill High School graduate is about to receive the ultimate gift from his wife — a lifesaving kidney — after what the couple calls a miracle match.
Jim Irish, who now lives in southern California with his wife Mirna, still holds fond memories of his time in Kansas City, calling it one of his “favorite places of all time.”
After recently overcoming cancer, Jim faced another life-threatening battle: he needed a kidney transplant. Without hesitation, Mirna stepped forward to donate hers — but first, she had to undergo treatment for inactive tuberculosis to qualify.
Despite initial doubts about compatibility, the couple received incredible news: Mirna was a match.
“It was a match, and we couldn’t believe it, and we were incredibly happy,” said Mirna.
The journey hasn’t been easy. From consultations with dietitians and nephrologists to countless tests and stressful moments, the couple remained strong and hopeful.
“Sometimes, it’s been very hard,” Mirna admitted.
Jim couldn’t be more grateful.
“She stepped up, and she’s got a huge heart. She’s not one in 100,000 — she’s one in a million,” he said.
With their transplant surgery scheduled for August 8, the couple looks forward to traveling to Europe and returning to a more normal life — together.
Jim also has a heartfelt message for others:
“Think about donating, either to a loved one or even a stranger. It’s an act of life, and you don’t just save one life — you save a village.”
He added a reassuring reminder:
“It’s a safe procedure, and there are safeguards. It’s rewarding, not just for the donee, but the donor as well.”
