Bear Destroys Car in Colorado, Likely Drawn by McDonald’s Leftovers

A bear caused major damage to a vehicle in Boulder County, Colorado, after getting trapped inside—possibly lured by the smell of leftover McDonald’s food.

According to a video shared by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the bear was stuck in the car for at least 30 minutes before deputies arrived. The vehicle’s owner, who was housesitting nearby, reported the incident.

To safely release the animal, a deputy locked the car and tied a rope to the door handle, then backed away to a safe distance. With a shotgun loaded with bean bag rounds in hand, he pulled the rope to open the door. Fortunately, the bear immediately bolted into the wilderness.

Once the situation was under control, the deputy and the vehicle owner surveyed the extensive interior damage. The deputy remarked on the presence of “a little bit of McDonald’s” inside, suggesting it may have attracted the bear.

The video ends with the deputy saying he needed to head to another bear-related call—this time involving a Toyota.

The sheriff’s office issued a reminder:

“Here’s the deal: in remote areas, many people leave their cars unlocked because there’s ‘no crime.’ But in bear country, an unlocked car is like hanging a ‘buffet is open’ sign. Bears can smell everything—your coffee, granola bars, chocolate stash, even vanilla-scented hand lotion.”
