OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma man is facing a first-degree murder charge after admitting to stabbing his girlfriend, Thanh Thi Yen To, to death. Loved ones are now mourning the woman they knew as Kelly To, describing her as caring, fearless, and deeply devoted to her children.
Over the weekend, Kyle Guthrie called 911 and confessed to killing To, telling police they had been “doing mushrooms” and that he “stabbed her all over her body,” according to court documents.
When Oklahoma City Police arrived, they found the 36-year-old dead at the scene.
To’s death has shocked and devastated her friends and family.
“It doesn’t matter what the circumstances were; no one deserves to go through what she went through,” said Jillian Canada-Meador, a close friend. “I can’t imagine what her final moments were like.”
Her friends say To’s tragic story brings renewed attention to the dangers of domestic violence.
“When you love someone, you want to give them a chance to try again, and that’s what happened,” said Amy Trin-Bishop, another friend.
To, a nail technician, was remembered as a “firecracker” with a strong will and a loving heart.
“She was caring, she was empathetic, she was strong-willed, she wasn’t scared of anything,” said Jarrid Bishop, who also noted her devotion to her two children. “They were her top priority.”
Recently separated and navigating life as a single mother, To remained focused on creating a good life for her kids.
“She still wanted to make them happy,” Bishop said.
As friends and family continue to process the loss, they say her spirit and warmth will live on in everyone she touched.
“It’s shining in every person you loved, every laugh you sparked, and every heart that’s grieving you now,” Canada-Meador said. “I’ll carry your joy and your kindness with me always.”
