Colorado Investigators Reopen 1988 Cold Case of Teen Strangled and Left in Ditch

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — Nearly 37 years after 17-year-old Towana Lewis was found strangled in an irrigation ditch, investigators are appealing to the public for new leads in the cold case.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Lewis’ body was discovered on Sept. 11, 1988, in a rural ditch. An autopsy confirmed she had been strangled, and investigators believe she died around Sept. 9 or 10. In the days leading up to her death, Lewis was reportedly seen at Prospect Lake Park.

On July 31, authorities announced renewed interest in speaking with anyone who knew Sgt. Darwyn Jones, a now-deceased Fort Carson soldier who allegedly knew Lewis and may have had insight into her whereabouts before her death.

Jones served as a tank turret mechanic with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment from February 1986 to July 1989.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information—no matter how small—about Lewis, Jones, or the case itself to come forward.

“Even seemingly minor details could help bring closure to this decades-old case,” the office said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
