KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – A tense seven-hour standoff ended without injury Friday morning after a man fired a shot at pedestrians along Central Avenue, prompting a major police response.
UPDATE: Police safely took the suspect into custody at 8:50 a.m., bringing the standoff to a peaceful conclusion.
EARLIER: The standoff began around 1:45 a.m. when Kansas City, Kansas police received reports that a man had fired a shot at two people walking their dog near Bethany Park Towers at 11th Street and Central Avenue.
Police say the man, who was sitting outside the high-rise, made a comment before firing a single round. He then ran back into his apartment, triggering a full-scale response.
Officers quickly surrounded the building, illuminating the suspect’s apartment with spotlights to signal, “We are here and not leaving.” Authorities shut down Central Avenue between 11th Street and Valley Street for public safety.
According to investigators, the man is in his twenties and has a history of mental health issues. Police worked throughout the early morning hours to communicate with him and resolve the situation without force.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and no hostages were believed to be inside the apartment with the man.
