Starting Thursday, July 31, Colorado law enforcement will ramp up DUI enforcement targeting motorcyclists, just as hundreds of thousands of riders are expected to pass through the state for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), motorcyclists made up 24% of all traffic deaths in the state in 2024. With an estimated 500,000 riders traveling on major highways like I-25, I-70, and I-76, officials say the risk of impaired driving is too high to ignore.
“Impaired riding motorcycles and impaired driving cars tend to be one of the top causes of traffic deaths in our state,” said Sam Cole, Traffic Safety Manager for CDOT. “That’s why this enforcement period is so critical. It keeps motorcyclists and all road users safer.”
Over 50 law enforcement agencies statewide will participate in the crackdown, which continues through August 12.
CDOT is urging motorcyclists to:
-
Wear helmets
-
Ride sober
-
Stay alert
Drivers are reminded to watch blind spots for motorcycles and never drive under the influence.
