Stolen Truck Leads to Arrest of Armed Suspect in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS — A stolen vehicle investigation on Tuesday, July 29, led Colorado Springs Police to arrest an armed suspect near Austin Bluffs Parkway and North Academy Boulevard.

Around 6:15 p.m., CSPD’s Motor Vehicle Theft Unit located a stolen green Chevrolet Silverado. During their investigation, officers discovered a Glock 9mm handgun in the vehicle’s glove box. When a marked police cruiser attempted a traffic stop, the driver took off.

Officers later tracked the vehicle to the 3400 block of North Academy, near Union Boulevard. Police identified two individuals, 38-year-old Caleb Kirkland and 22-year-old Raelyn Birthmark, leaving the vehicle on foot. When officers tried to stop them, Kirkland fled.

According to CSPD, Kirkland pulled a gun from his pocket during the chase. Officers ordered him to drop it, and he eventually threw it aside but kept running. Officers used a taser on Kirkland, but he continued to resist. He was eventually subdued, medically treated, and booked into the Criminal Justice Center.

Kirkland now faces multiple charges, including:

  • Motor vehicle theft

  • Vehicular eluding

  • Firearm theft

  • Unlawful concealed weapon possession

  • Obstruction

Police have not released additional details about Birthmark’s role in the incident.
