Two people are facing federal charges after allegedly distributing fentanyl that led to the death of a 15-year-old girl in Colorado Springs, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado.
On June 7, 2025, Colorado Springs Police and medical responders found the teen unresponsive and later declared her dead at the scene. Investigators recovered nine blue pills marked “M” and “30,” believed to be fentanyl, wrapped in a receipt.
A search of the victim’s phone revealed she had arranged to meet 57-year-old Eugene Edwards at a local elementary school the night before her death to buy pills. Surveillance footage confirmed Edwards’ car was at the location. Just an hour later, video near the victim’s home showed her smoking what appeared to be fentanyl. She died shortly after.
Edwards, who has a criminal history including drug offenses, robbery, and burglary, was arrested on June 13. Police found suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, and ten additional fentanyl pills in his car.
During questioning, Edwards told investigators he received the pills from 30-year-old Destiny Benjamin. Court documents and cell phone data show a drug-related relationship between the two, involving the exchange of fentanyl, meth, and money. Benjamin was arrested shortly after, and officers found fentanyl, meth, and a loaded handgun in her possession.
On July 28, both Edwards and Benjamin appeared in Federal Court in Denver, where they were charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death.
If convicted, they each face:
-
20 years to life in prison
-
A fine up to $1 million
-
At least three years of supervised release
This case underscores the ongoing danger of illicit fentanyl, especially among teens, and highlights law enforcement’s commitment to holding suppliers accountable for overdose deaths.
