The National Governors Association (NGA) summer meeting concluded this weekend in Colorado Springs after three days of policy discussions among state and federal leaders.
On the final day, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke about his Make America Healthy Again initiative, highlighting the need for better food standards and healthcare outcomes in the U.S.
“We pay 2 to 3 times more for health care than any of the European countries, and we have the worst health outcomes of any country in the world,” Kennedy said.
He emphasized updating national food guidelines to promote healthier options in schools and eliminate harmful additives like food dyes.
“This will give everybody the rationale for driving it into our schools, it will change diets and prison populations in the military and elsewhere,” he added.
Kennedy also expressed a desire to partner with states to share Medicaid data for independent scientific research, particularly to compare the long-term effects of various diabetes medications.
Meanwhile, Colorado Governor Jared Polis officially ended his term as NGA chair, passing the role to Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt on Saturday, July 26.
“We have the responsibility to shape the trajectory of our nation,” Stitt said during his address.
Stitt announced a new initiative focused on reigniting the American dream by investing in education, artificial intelligence, and economic development.
“States should foster a business-friendly environment for entrepreneurs to create jobs, and this is accomplished with pro-business policies and fewer regulations,” he said.
Though no longer chair, Polis will remain on the NGA’s executive committee until his term as governor ends in 2026.
