The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has identified 38-year-old Shawn Harris as the suspect in the deadly shooting of Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy Elijah Ming.
According to the KBI, Harris opened fire on Deputy Ming and a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer Saturday afternoon while they responded to a woman’s call for help as she moved out of a residence in the 2600 block of S. 30th Street.
Harris was wounded in an exchange of gunfire and later released from the hospital around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. He was transferred to the Johnson County Adult Detention Center and booked on a charge of capital murder of a law enforcement officer. Formal charges are pending.
A Long Criminal History

In January 2012, Harris pleaded guilty to felony theft involving property valued between $1,000 and $25,000 from an incident in Edwardsville, Kansas. He was sentenced to seven months in prison, suspended pending completion of one year of probation.

A month later, in February 2012, Harris was charged in Wyandotte County with three counts of attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to 10 months in prison and a year of probation.

While awaiting resolution of that case, he was charged with felony aggravated robbery in May 2012 in Wyandotte County. He received a 130-month prison sentence after completing his assault sentence.

Around the same time, in Lafayette County, Missouri, Harris pleaded guilty to felony motor vehicle tampering in July 2012. He was sentenced to seven years.

While in custody for the Missouri charge, he also pleaded guilty to felony damage to jail property, receiving a four-year sentence.
Altogether, Harris was sentenced to more than 11.5 years in prison for his 2012 convictions. A judge allowed his Missouri sentence to run concurrently with his Kansas time.
According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, Harris was released from state custody on December 11, 2024.
The case remains under active investigation.
