One person died and three others were injured Sunday after part of the Family Dollar building at 3726 Broadway Blvd. collapsed.
Kansas City police and fire crews arrived just before 2:45 p.m. to find a partial collapse of the parapet wall and facade.
All injuries happened outside the building, according to KCFD Battalion Chief Mike Hopkins.
A 68-year-old man was killed. A 50-year-old woman was critically injured, and two others were treated and released.
Because of the fatality, Kansas City police have taken over the investigation.
Broadway between 36th and 38th Streets will stay closed for several hours while crews clear debris and investigate.
A bystander said they helped rescue people from the scene and shared photos of the damage. Another nearby resident also shared images showing the store’s front coming loose.
Dangerous buildings personnel will now assess the structure’s safety, Hopkins said.
