DENVER (KDVR) — A teen with a newly issued driver’s license was cited after allegedly racing another car at 108 mph — more than 50 mph over the limit — on Highway 83, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy clocked the teen’s vehicle speeding on a stretch of highway where the speed limit is 55 mph. When pulled over, the teen reportedly admitted he saw another car “coming up fast” and decided to “hit it” to go even faster.
He was cited for reckless driving, engaging in a speed contest, and speeding 53 mph over the limit.
“The teen may not realize it now, but Deputy Whinery may have just saved his life,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Racing at extreme speeds, especially as an inexperienced driver, can end in tragedy.”
Despite the severity of the incident, the teen wasn’t arrested due to his juvenile status and was released to his parents.
Under Colorado law, speeding more than 25 mph over the limit can result in a 10-day to one-year jail sentence, but juveniles are often handled through other channels. Fines for lesser speeding violations range from $35 to $200.
The sheriff’s office used the incident as a teaching moment:
“Let this be a reminder: Speeding isn’t worth it. Slow down. Drive safe. Make it home.”
