KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) — Businesses near 23rd Street and Television Place, just east of Kansas City, are once again under water due to persistent flooding—and more rain is on the way.
As of Thursday evening, floodwater outside the FISCA gas station remained waist-deep. The owners waded through murky water, stacking sandbags in a desperate attempt to keep it from entering the building. Much of their inventory has already been lost.
Next door, Anthony Chavez, general manager of Pallet Rack KC, said the flooding may ruin thousands of dollars’ worth of steel storage racks.
“They are going to get rusty. You know, it’s definitely going to damage my racks,” Chavez said. “It’s going to cost me.”
Chavez recalled similar flooding nearly 10 years ago—but that water disappeared within a day. This time, it’s not receding.
According to MoDOT (Missouri Department of Transportation), crews arrived at 3 a.m. Thursday and identified a clogged pipe south of 23rd Street—on private property—as the likely cause. MoDOT said it will return at 3 a.m. Friday to continue assessing and begin cleanup once the water level drops.
The affected area falls within unincorporated Jackson County, which complicates stormwater management and response coordination.
“I’m going to tell you the truth. I mean, Jackson County just raised our business property tax, and you would think that because they’re doing that—they would try to take care of something like this,” Chavez said. “I’m looking for answers too.”
MoDOT plans to share updates via social media as the cleanup and drainage efforts continue.
