DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) — A Denver man has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for leading a large-scale drug trafficking ring in Colorado.
Leonardo Medina, 46, was handed the lengthy sentence following a joint investigation by the Denver Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, Medina supplied bulk quantities of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine to dealers across Denver and Colorado Springs in 2021 and 2022.
Investigators used wiretaps, undercover buys, surveillance, financial tracking, and electronic monitoring to uncover the extent of Medina’s operation. In July 2022, they intercepted a planned shipment of over 40 pounds of meth from Mexico after tapping Medina’s phone and working with officers in Texas to seize the drugs.
“Mr. Medina chose to make a living by dealing drugs, which kill people and destroy communities. This lengthy prison sentence puts him out of business,” said U.S. Attorney Peter McNeilly.
Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas added, “These sentencings send the message that if you sell drugs in our city, we will find you and hold you accountable.”
