PUEBLO, Colo. – Law enforcement is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that happened Tuesday night in Pueblo.
Around 11:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at the Loaf ‘N Jug located at 31918 E. Highway 96, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.
A store employee told deputies that a customer had been approached by the driver of a gold Ford Explorer asking for money. When the customer said he didn’t have any, the driver allegedly replied that he would rob the next person who walked into the store.
When deputies attempted to make contact with the people inside the Explorer, the driver reportedly rammed two patrol vehicles, injuring one deputy. Deputies said shots were fired, and the suspect vehicle sped westbound down Highway 96.
The vehicle was later stopped when deputies performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver, which caused it to roll near Highway 96 and Victory Lane.
Deputies said the 23-year-old driver, who had two gunshot wounds, and a 42-year-old passenger were both taken into custody and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver was later transferred to a hospital in Colorado Springs for additional care.
The injured deputy was also taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said the driver will be arrested once he is released from the hospital.
The 10th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team is now handling the investigation.
