DENVER — A routine traffic stop in Douglas County led to the discovery of $136,000 in cash, prompting a federal investigation.
Deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were monitoring traffic on Interstate 25 near Greenland on Tuesday when they pulled over a vehicle for speeding. According to a Facebook post, the driver was acting erratically and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
A K-9 unit named Dozer was called in and alerted to the possible presence of narcotics. Deputies conducted a field sobriety test and searched the vehicle.
Though no drugs were found, deputies uncovered $136,000 in cash hidden inside the vehicle. Dozer also alerted to the cash, indicating it had likely been in contact with narcotics.
Due to the large amount of money and suspicious circumstances, federal authorities have taken over the case. The sheriff’s office did not disclose whether the driver was arrested or the outcome of the sobriety test.
