Crash on Hwy 83 Highlights Importance of Understanding Right of Way, Says Black Forest Fire and Rescue

A crash involving four people at the intersection of Highway 83 and North Powers Boulevard on Monday, July 21, is prompting a renewed safety message from Black Forest Fire and Rescue.

Around 11:30 a.m., crews from Black Forest Fire and Rescue and Monument Fire Protection District responded to the crash scene, where two vehicles had collided—one of them coming to rest against a traffic pole. All four occupants were able to exit their vehicles and were evaluated by medical personnel on site.

Officials noted that this particular intersection has seen multiple accidents in the past. They’re using the incident to remind drivers about the difference between a green light and a green arrow.

According to Black Forest Fire and Rescue:

  • A green arrow gives you the right-of-way to make a protected left turn—oncoming traffic is stopped.

  • A solid green light allows a left turn, but you must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. It is not a protected turn.

“Parents: Make sure your teen drivers understand this crucial distinction,” the department advised. “Adults: A quick refresher could help prevent serious accidents. Stay alert. Drive smart. Stay safe.”
