In a recent show of civic engagement, over 80,000 Coloradans voiced their opinions through a statewide survey—and the message was clear. The proposed pedestrian walkway to mark Colorado’s 150th anniversary has been overwhelmingly rejected.
Governor Jared Polis praised the strong public response and confirmed he would honor the results.
“Coloradans were clear, and I will stop the pedestrian walkway proposal in its tracks,” Polis announced, according to the Colorado Governor’s Office.
He doubled down on his commitment to public opinion, even saying, “If needed, I will chain myself to the Capitol plaza to prevent it from being built.”
A striking 93.9% of survey participants opposed the project, leading Polis to commend the public’s role in shaping how the state will celebrate its historic milestone.
With 2026 set to mark both the nation’s 250th and Colorado’s 150th anniversaries, Governor Polis highlighted the importance of inclusive, meaningful celebrations. A bipartisan 250/150 Commission has been formed to lead the planning process and ensure statewide involvement.
Survey results also revealed strong support for celebrating both anniversaries equally. A total of 34,694 respondents favored equal excitement for the national and state milestones, reflecting a shared sense of pride in both Colorado’s and the nation’s histories.
