(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pueblo has issued a flash flood warning for sections of Saguache, Alamosa, Custer, and Huerfano counties, effective until 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23.
At around 4 p.m., Doppler radar detected thunderstorms bringing heavy rain to southeastern Saguache County, northeastern Alamosa County, western Custer County, and northwestern Huerfano County.
Rainfall amounts ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 inches, with storm activity expected to produce between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain per hour.
The NWS warned that flash flooding could impact small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and low-lying zones with poor drainage. Debris flows are also possible along and near the west-facing slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
A separate flash flood warning is in effect for Central Fremont County until 6:45 p.m.
Officials urge residents in affected areas to take precautions: avoid flooded roadways, stay alert to changing conditions, and never attempt to drive through standing water—seek alternate routes instead.
The warning for Saguache, Alamosa, Custer, and Huerfano counties remains active through 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
