Man Charged with Manslaughter in Fatal Shooting of Two Kansas City Brothers

Prosecutors in Jackson County, Missouri, have charged a man with voluntary manslaughter after a deadly shooting that left two brothers dead inside a Kansas City convenience store on Sunday.

Police responded to a reported double shooting early Sunday afternoon, July 20, at a store in the 2200 block of Truman Road.

When officers arrived, they found two men with gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. On Monday, the victims were identified as Byron Garrett, 35, and Taylor Garrett, 32.

As detectives began their investigation, officers took a suspect into custody for questioning.

The suspect, Emmanuel Hernandez, told police he was at the gas station to fill up his vehicle when two men attacked him. He said the men assaulted him again when he went inside to pay for gas.

Surveillance footage from inside and outside the gas station showed Hernandez drawing a firearm after the second confrontation and shooting the two men.

The video also captured both men collapsing after being shot and showed Hernandez continuing to fire at them while they were on the ground.

Hernandez then struck one of the victims with his handgun before walking away and calling 911.

In addition to voluntary manslaughter, Hernandez has been charged with one count of armed criminal action.

He is currently being held at the Jackson County Detention Center without bond.
