PUEBLO, Colo. — A 24-year-old man is facing multiple charges after crashing a car into a Pueblo car wash, attempting to steal a change machine, and causing more than $20,000 in damages, according to police.
Around 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, Pueblo Police responded to a business on the 4000 block of West Northern Avenue, following a report of a red car that had slammed into a kiosk near Pueblo Boulevard. While officers were en route, they were told the driver was trying to steal the kiosk.
When officers arrived, they found David Alam trying to load the car wash’s change machine into his trunk. Once he noticed police approaching, he dropped the machine and tried to flee, driving into a nearby field.
But Alam didn’t make it far — his car got stuck in a drainage ditch, and he took off on foot. Officers say he surrendered after being warned they would deploy a taser.
He was arrested and booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center on several charges, including:
-
Criminal Mischief
-
Burglary
-
Careless Driving
-
Displaying Fictitious Plates
-
Failure to Appear
The crash and attempted theft caused an estimated $20,000 in property damage to both the car wash and the change machine.
Alam is currently being held on both a no-bond hold and a $3 personal recognizance bond, police said.
