Major Wildfires to Watch

South Rim Fire (Montrose County):
Burning since July 10, this fire has scorched more than 3,000 acres along the North and South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Managed by the National Park Service, response costs have reached $1.1 million. -
Sowbelly Fire (Mesa, Delta & Montrose Counties):
Covering 2,191 acres near Escalante Canyon Camp and the Potholes Recreation Site, this fire is being driven by wind through thick brush. The BLM Uncompahgre Field Office has spent $375,000 on firefighting efforts since July 10. -
Turner Gulch Fire (Mesa County):
Located roughly 7 miles northeast of Gateway, this fire has burned about 1,000 acres of brush and grass since July 10. Managed by the BLM Grand Junction Field Office, costs have climbed to $237,000. -
Wright Draw Fire (Mesa County):
A smaller blaze of 300 acres near Turner Gulch, located about 5 miles northeast of Gateway near Colorado 141. It’s burning west of the highway, with Turner Gulch burning to the south. -
Indian Fire & Spring Camp Fire (Grand Mesa):
The Spring Camp Fire is fully contained as of July 11. The Indian Fire, east of Whitewater, continues to smolder after water drops and helicopter support. It has burned six acres. -
Deer Creek Fire (Montrose County):
This fast-growing fire crossed from San Juan County, Utah, into Colorado, now covering over 7,000 acres about 12 miles west of Paradox. Managed by the Division of Forestry Fire & State Lands — Southeast Area, it has cost $700,000 so far.

Although Highway 50 remains open, conditions could change at any time. Expect delays, heavy smoke, and emergency vehicle activity between Grand Junction, Olathe, Gateway, and Montrose. Obey closure signs and stay out of restricted zones.
