Driver Identified in Deadly Highway 50 Pedestrian Crash

Authorities have identified the individuals involved in a fatal auto-pedestrian crash on westbound Highway 50.

The Colorado State Patrol confirmed that 24-year-old Karin Leal-Ruiz was driving the 2008 yellow and black Chevrolet Cobalt that struck the pedestrian. The passenger has been identified as Valentin Guelta, though his age remains unknown.

The crash happened early in the morning on July 6 at around 4:27 a.m.

Later that day, the Chevrolet Cobalt was found at the registered owner’s home in Delta. The car had major damage to the hood and windshield, consistent with hitting a pedestrian, according to a news release.

Surveillance footage revealed the vehicle leaving the residence at approximately 4:13 a.m. and arriving at a Maverik gas station at 4:16 a.m. Video showed Leal-Ruiz entering the store to pay for gas while a passenger waited inside the car. The vehicle was then seen leaving the station at 4:21 a.m., heading west on Highway 50 in the direction of the crash scene.

Authorities believe the two may have fled the area in another vehicle, the release stated.

Investigators also determined the victim was hit by two additional vehicles after the initial impact. Both of those drivers have come forward and are cooperating with the investigation.
