Suspect Identified in 17,000-Acre Wildfire on Utah-Colorado Border

LA SAL, Utah — Investigators have identified a suspect linked to the 17,000-acre Deer Creek Fire burning near the Utah-Colorado border, officials announced Monday.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with the Utah Fire Authority, confirmed that the wildfire was human-caused. However, they have not released details about the suspect’s identity or whether an arrest has been made.

The Deer Creek Fire, first reported on July 10 near the town of La Sal, has destroyed 10 structures, including five homes. As of Monday, containment had reached 54 percent.

The blaze has drawn significant attention, especially after a dramatic “firenado” — a fire-induced tornado — was spotted over the area, stunning residents and firefighters alike.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause and monitor fire behavior as crews work to bring the wildfire under control.
