COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Colorado Task Force 1 (CO-TF1) is continuing its deployment in Texas to assist with flood recovery efforts after completing a major search and rescue operation along the Guadalupe River.
The team, along with partner agencies, finished primary and secondary searches in its designated zone between Center Point and Comfort on Monday, July 21. In total, CO-TF1 covered more than 10 square miles and 24 shoreline miles, conducting nearly 900 targeted searches using hand crews and heavy machinery.
To search areas inaccessible by foot or vehicle, the team deployed AquaEye®, a sonar device used for underwater detection. The technology proved so effective that other divisions have now requested CO-TF1’s support in using the same tool.
During the deployment, members have been based at Schreiner University in Kerrville, where staff have provided meals and shelter. One university cook, who lost his home in the flooding, has continued to serve meals to responders daily — a gesture CO-TF1 called both humbling and inspiring.
The task force says its efforts have provided much-needed closure to many residents — confirming the safety of some homes and helping others locate missing loved ones.
Due to continued need, CO-TF1 has been reassigned to a new division beginning Tuesday. The duration of the extended deployment remains uncertain, but team leaders say they remain committed to supporting the people of Texas during this time.
CO-TF1 is coordinated by West Metro Fire Rescue and is one of 28 FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces nationwide. The current deployment began July 9, with additional personnel arriving July 14. The team now includes 81 members and five search canines.
