2 Arrested After Shots Fired in Separate E-470 Road Rage Incidents

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) announced arrests in two separate road rage incidents involving gunfire along E-470, just as it ramps up patrols for the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer.”

The first incident occurred on July 6 when a driver reported that a BMW driver opened fire after refusing to let them merge onto E-470 from Smoky Hill Road. Surveillance cameras helped investigators identify the suspect as 34-year-old Benjamin C. L. Roberts, who was arrested and booked into the Arapahoe County Jail on a 1st-degree assault charge.

Just two days later, on July 8, CSP responded to a second shooting near the Gartrell exit. In that case, the driver of a gray RAM pickup allegedly fired at another vehicle during a heated encounter on the road. Troopers arrested 47-year-old Kip D. Boyer the following day. Boyer admitted to the shooting and was also booked for 1st-degree assault.

These arrests come as the CSP increases enforcement statewide to combat dangerous driving during the summer months—specifically from Memorial Day to Labor Day, a time period marked by an increase in traffic fatalities. In 2024 alone, more than 350 people lost their lives on Colorado roads during these months, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
