LEAWOOD, Kan. – Several parks and trails in Leawood are temporarily closed or operating under limited access after overnight storms brought record rainfall and flash flooding to the Kansas City metro area.

The Leawood Aquatic Park remains open but under limited use, and morning swim lessons were canceled, according to city spokesperson Beth Breitenstein.

Rainfall Totals & Damage Assessment

Leawood received between 1.54 and 2.68 inches of rain in just 12 hours, according to Johnson County’s Stormwatch flood warning system.

The full extent of damage remains unclear, as floodwaters have yet to recede completely. Parks staff will begin assessing damage once conditions improve, Breitenstein said.

Fortunately, the city did not experience major road blockages from the storm.

Ongoing Caution for Park Users

Breitenstein urged residents to avoid using trails for now—even if the water begins to recede:

“You may encounter low-lying areas that are still seeing ponding. If you’re biking or walking, you might have to turn around due to obstructions.”

She emphasized the importance of using common sense and exercising caution when returning to recreational areas.
