Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne says he supports the Trump administration’s plan to lay off thousands at the U.S. Department of Education, stating the move gives states more control over education.
The Supreme Court recently cleared the way for the administration to move forward with eliminating 1,400 federal education jobs and shifting responsibilities to other agencies.
“I feel like I can do a much better job than a federal department of education,” Horne said. “I have 600 people working for me who know Arizona schools backwards and forwards. Many of them have been doing it for many years.”
Horne also noted that the workers affected by the layoffs could help address Arizona’s ongoing teacher shortage.
