Teen arrested in stolen car near Colorado Springs Airport; adult also charged

Two people were arrested Tuesday evening after police stopped a stolen vehicle near the Colorado Springs Airport, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

Around 7:45 p.m. on July 15, CSPD’s Motor Vehicle Theft Unit located a stolen Honda Civic near Airport Road and South Academy Boulevard. Detectives began surveillance and identified a teen boy as the driver and 18-year-old Joseph Martinez as the passenger.

When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver took off, and police chose not to pursue. A short time later, detectives used a grapple device to stop the car near South Murray and East Fountain Boulevards.

Both suspects ran from the scene but were quickly caught. Detectives said they recovered a stolen handgun from the passenger floorboard and also found controlled substances in the driver’s possession.

The teen driver is facing charges including motor vehicle theft, felony eluding, obstruction, and violating a protection order. Martinez faces charges of obstruction, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and violating a protection order.
