A Riverside man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a brutal 2019 assault on his girlfriend.
Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd announced Wednesday that Charles Cooke received the sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree domestic assault in April.
Court documents reveal that on October 15, 2019, Cooke punched his then-girlfriend more than 20 times in the face and head, leaving her with a traumatic brain injury.
He left her unconscious on the floor, choking on her own blood. Authorities said the assault was recorded on his cell phone, and afterward, he spent 22 minutes cleaning up the scene.
Phone records show Cooke drove around for about 10 minutes, calling a friend and a family member before finally dialing 911.
The woman was hospitalized for over two months due to the severity of her injuries.
A Platte County judge ruled that Cooke must serve at least 85% of his sentence before he’s eligible for parole.
