A 26-year-old Kansas City man has pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges after his 3-week-old daughter was hospitalized with multiple serious injuries.
According to Clay County Circuit Court records, Dakota B. Hemphill entered the plea on Tuesday, July 15, following a June warrant that accused him of abusing the infant. He now faces two counts of child abuse.
Court documents reveal that in February, the newborn was admitted to Children’s Mercy Hospital with a fractured femur. Further scans uncovered multiple rib fractures, a tibia fracture, liver lacerations, and other injuries—all consistent with abuse, according to a probable cause statement filed by Kansas City police.
During an interview with police, Hemphill claimed the femur fracture may have occurred while stretching the baby’s legs during a diaper change. He said the other injuries may have resulted from accidentally rolling onto the child while sleeping with her in bed.
Investigators concluded Hemphill knowingly caused the child’s injuries and failed to seek medical attention, prompting the charges. He was arrested Saturday, July 14, and booked into the Clay County Detention Center.
If convicted, Hemphill could face up to 30 years in prison under Missouri law. He remains in custody with no bond set, and his next court hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday, July 25.
