13-Year-Old Girl in Critical Condition After Downtown Pueblo Shooting

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) — A 13-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being shot near the Pueblo Riverwalk early Monday morning, according to Pueblo Police.

The incident happened just before 3 a.m. near 102 S. Victoria Ave, an area close to the popular downtown Riverwalk. Police say the teen was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and her family confirmed to KRDO13 that a bullet passed through her brain. She’s already undergone two surgeries and remains in critical condition.

Her family says they had stopped for food shortly before the girl was supposed to attend a sleepover with friends.

Police Investigation Underway

Police say they are reviewing security camera footage and interviewing two people who were with the girl at the time of the shooting. Investigators recovered the car involved in the crime and are working to develop a suspect profile, though it’s still unclear whether the girl was targeted or if the attack was random.

Increased Patrols Downtown

Following the incident—and a recent uptick in downtown crime—the Pueblo Police Department announced it will increase patrols in the area. The news was welcomed by many visitors and residents.

“The fact that Pueblo PD is circulating throughout the downtown area adds a layer of comfort,” said James Duncan, a Colorado Springs visitor. “This place would really flourish if safety weren’t such a concern.”

Police are also reminding the public of existing city curfew laws:

  • Public parks are closed between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

  • Minors have a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday

  • On Fridays and Saturdays, the curfew is from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m.

These curfews apply unless minors are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or another adult over 21.

The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo (HARP), which oversees the Riverwalk area, declined to comment on whether it would increase private security presence in light of the shooting.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Pueblo Police as the investigation continues.
