Good morning. Today’s opinions newsletter reflects on the destruction of the North Rim, Arizona’s water challenges, and a heartfelt tribute to the late cartoonist Steve Benson.
It’s hard to grasp—it’s all gone.
The Dragon Bravo Fire erupted over the weekend, wiping out the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and nearly everything that once welcomed visitors to the North Rim.
We had visited the South Rim on July 5, just a day after lightning sparked the fire. Strangely, there was no sign of smoke, no scent of fire in the air. I even looked for signs from the Watchtower and saw nothing.
We mentioned how we’d always meant to make that extra drive to see the North Rim.
That makes today’s news hit even harder. It’s a painful reminder of the danger in waiting for “someday.”
It also shows just how fragile our forests have become. A small, monitored fire quickly turned catastrophic with the help of the wind.
