Missouri Governor Promotes New Law That Could Bring Royals Stadium to Clay County

Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe visited North Kansas City on Friday to spotlight new legislation that could pave the way for a Kansas City Royals stadium in Clay County.

Kehoe said the county now has the legal tools in place if the Royals choose to relocate there, stating, “We have the assets in place and we certainly have the elected leaders.” His remarks come amid growing speculation that the Royals could move across the river from Jackson County.

The legislation, which goes into effect in August, allows Clay County to form a “sports complex authority” — a governmental body that can oversee development, financing, and operations of large-scale sports projects. Supporters say this is a crucial step toward attracting either a new Royals stadium or even a Kansas City Chiefs training facility to the area.

“It’s a tool that opens the path,” Kehoe said, referring to the bill’s potential to boost regional sports development.

As talks between the Royals and Clay County officials are expected to intensify in the coming weeks, the new law is seen as a strategic move in Missouri’s efforts to keep the Royals in-state — but possibly in a new location.
