Arizona Man Sentenced for Defrauding Federal Housing Assistance Program

PHOENIX – An Arizona man who illegally obtained thousands of dollars in federal housing aid has been sentenced, according to officials.

Jalil Al-Kinani was given 18 months of supervised probation and ordered to repay $13,784 in restitution to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Arizona Attorney General’s Office announced Wednesday.

“When individuals steal taxpayer-funded resources meant to help our most vulnerable neighbors, they’re not just committing fraud — they’re undermining the systems that keep families housed and communities stable,” said Attorney General Kris Mayes in a statement.

Authorities say Al-Kinani misrepresented his employment and income status on paperwork submitted to HUD between June 2019 and November 2020. He claimed to be unemployed with an income of roughly $100 per month, when in reality he was employed and earned nearly $60,000 that year.

As a result of the false information, Al-Kinani received $13,784 in housing assistance — the exact amount he must now repay.

“This outcome reinforces our commitment to protecting the integrity of taxpayer-funded programs that are meant to provide critical housing assistance to the most vulnerable in our communities,” said Robert Lawler, Special Agent in Charge with HUD’s Office of Inspector General.
