Ex-Houston Board Member Faces Backlash for Calling Flood-Struck Camp ‘White-Only Girls Camp’

A former member of Houston’s Food Insecurity Board is under fire after posting a TikTok video referring to Camp Mystic—where several girls remain missing following devastating flash floods—as a “white-only girls’ Christian camp.”

Sade Perkins, appointed in 2023 by former Mayor Sylvester Turner, made the comments in a 2.5-minute video shared from her private TikTok account. While not appearing on camera, Perkins shows the camp’s website and accuses it of lacking any racial diversity.

“I know I’m going to get cancelled for this, but Camp Mystic is a white-only girls’ Christian camp. They don’t even have a token Asian. They don’t have a token Black person,” she says. “It’s an all-white, white-only conservative Christian camp.”

The video quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread criticism and prompting a response from current Houston Mayor John Whitmire.

“These comments are deeply inappropriate,” Whitmire said Sunday. “They have no place in a decent society, especially while families are grieving confirmed losses and awaiting updates on missing loved ones.”

Whitmire clarified that Perkins is not a City of Houston employee. Though she was appointed to the Food Insecurity Board by the previous administration, her term ends in January 2025. The mayor confirmed he has no plans to reappoint her and said the city is moving to remove her from the board immediately.

Meanwhile, Kerr County officials provided a grim update: 11 girls from Camp Mystic remain missing after the Guadalupe River surged to 26 feet in just 45 minutes early Friday morning, overwhelming the flood gauge and submerging parts of the camp.

Established in 1926, Camp Mystic is known for its scenic setting and long waitlist. Photos from before the flood show smiling girls aged 8 to 17 fishing, riding horses, and dancing in matching T-shirts under towering oaks and cypress trees along the Guadalupe River.
