Jefferson County, Colo. (KDVR) — The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office joined forces on Saturday for a special operation targeting reckless motorcycle riders — and officials say it delivered results.
After a deadly June marked by 11 motorcycle-related fatalities and 43 injury crashes, CSP said the coordinated crackdown was a necessary step to increase roadway safety.
Working with local agencies and using both ground units and air support, troopers were able to spot dangerous behavior and take swift action.
Key results from the operation include:
-
25 motorcyclists stopped
-
11 riders clocked at 20+ mph over the speed limit
-
13 of 45 vehicles had no license plates
-
3 drivers cited for reckless driving
-
1 rider arrested for felony eluding
The eluding incident involved a motorcyclist weaving dangerously through lanes on C-470, hitting speeds up to 120 mph while using the right shoulder to escape. CSP didn’t pursue directly, relying instead on aerial tracking to avoid escalating the danger.
“We don’t necessarily chase all the time — especially when we have an aircraft in the sky that can follow that motorcycle,” explained Trooper Hunter Mathew.
The rider was eventually apprehended after pulling into a Golden parking lot, thanks to aerial surveillance.
“The video is a prime example of what we’re dealing with — cars can’t see these motorcycles in time as they bomb through traffic,” Mathew added. “That’s a danger to the motorcyclist and everyone else on the roadway.”
CSP says operations like this help illustrate the risks and reinforce the need for motorcycle safety and responsible driving.
